I have decided that for the "dead palette" workshop I am attending

for the next two days

I will focus on portraiture.

There remains much for me to investigate

in figure painting, but I will save that for

April when I attend a workshop on

experiential figure painting.

I enjoy drawing portraits, but painting

is something else.

It is always good to push on

into uncomfortable territory.

We shall see what transpires.

This weekend I am participating in a two day workshop

focusing on the figure and using a dead palette.

For those unfamiliar, a dead palette

is limited to the use of

Alizarin crimson

Cadmium yellow light

yellow ochre

Payne's grey

and Unbleached titanium or Titian buff

I have purchased a large sketch pad

to loosen up with figure drawing this week so I will be prepared

the Paper Place's

Scrap Bag Sale.

They offer an opportunity to fill a bag

with end cut, scraps, samples etc.

of all of their papers.

Working Plans for the Day

As an artist, we must be able to 'go with the flow', be flexible.

Yesterday our family welcomed the arrival of grandson #3, Noah Anderson.

I guess I had a bit of a baby buzz going because my day in the studio

was very productive.

I had planned on sharing with you today the fruits of

yesterday's efforts.

Well after visits and cuddle time, an overnight with my grand daughter (including a drop off at

school this morning), I didn't get the images downloaded.

This morning I get to spend three hours at a local McDonald's while the car

undergoes some minor but necessary corrective surgery.

Fortunately, everything with still in the studio

patiently waiting to be shared with you all

possibly tomorrow.

I spend yesterday working with some larger prints

that felt were not as successful as I had hoped

Sometimes, these prints get torn and incorporated

into collage pieces.

Today, I took small matts and 'surfed' around the print

until I found something that worked for me.

From a Different Viewpoint

This morning I pulled out this piece on w/c paper that I have been working on.

I have a habit of using leftover paint from one painting and scrapping it onto another

I don't want to waste any.

So, as I looked at this piece and got out several sizes of cut mat to see what was happening

I decided that I would just lay it different ways on the scanner and consider my options.

So many.

Time will tell in the end

I am not completely satisfied with either (still feel they are a little sloppy),

Exploring the Grey Palette

I have two workshops in the next six weeks with Brian Smith, here in Toronto. Both workshops will be using the figure but the first will be further explorations using the 'dead palette", while the the second will be on using the model a a launching point for work after the workshop. I'm looking forward to both (Brian is GREAT).

But in preparation for both workshops, I feel it will be valuable for me

to spend some time working with a grey palette, and getting a better

handle on value in painting. I plan on taking a few days working with only black and white, and then to add colour. We shall see how it goes.

Following up from Monday's "What's on my easel"

you may remember this was where I was.

Moving forward, but by no means complete

Monday evening my bedtime read was Robert Genn "Twice Weekly Letters" and the letter I read dealt with grey palette.

Tuesday I set to work exploring all the shades of a single colour (thing case green gold)

The work in now complete.

I now have plans for this series and am very anxious to get started.

Keeping it Together

As a mixed media artist, keeping it together, as in "sticking it down",

is key for a completed work.

I have researched and experimented

and I find much depends of your intensions.

One method that I use are

the trusty glue-stick.

Most of my papers are very thin and delicate and I find the glue works very well.

Also, some of my works are papers only, and are never receive any paint so they stand up very well.

I have also used an acrylic medium as a adhesive and this can also work very well. I have use medium on paper, canvas, artist board with great success

Now a method that I have just investigated in the "tack down" method, were your support and your collaged materials receive a thin coat of medium, are allowed to dry, and then fused one to the other with an iron. Once I realized I could use freezer paper to protect my iron, and ensured the two acrylic coated materials fused, the process was much more successful.

Economy of Artist's Materials

I used to think that some supports were possessed until I was able to release its inner demon and find the work contained within.

Then I realized that some days in the studio where better than others.

Do I trash the work that didn't work or hang onto it until I dragged it out tried again.

My daily process depends greatly on my mood.

Some days I want only to play with colour

other days it's texture

Some others, the figure.

I can't remember how long I held on and worked the sheet of watercolour

until I was able find what it was meant for.

I have become very thoughtful of the use of my materials lately.

Trying to make my materials last as long as my needs (I'm sticking to a budget when it comes to materials this year).

I have three bin of found papers which help support my need to create.

A very wise art instructor once said, "somedays you are the windshield - some days the bug".

That can apply to so many things in life, but the last few

days it seems to be what is happening in the studio.

Hey, every piece can't be a masterpiece. Maybe some are only a masterpiece to me. Some can be salvaged into other pieces, while some there is no hope but the green bin.

Some days I feel as I am disrespectful to the tree for wasting the paper

it gave me.

I realize it is important to learn from these days as they be more

important than the good days.

But, let us hope to have more windshield days than bug days.

It a professional development day for the schools in our area today

My granddaughter and I had a sleepover (in our matching pajamas) and are spending the day together

Having a girls lunch out (no fast food, but somewhere with table service - lunch out does not mean food through the car window)

Abstracted Printmaking

I am an abstract painter. I lack a certain calm which I find necessary to find that lovely realism that I see in many artists work

I prefer to not thinking about the final result but rather see what I have at the moment and the wonder

"am I there yet" - is it a resolved work?? do I need to push on??

This is not often the approach taken in print.

Plates are created with an anticipated finale

Akua Inks - Fade to Black

As many of you print makers know, Akua Inks are holding a "Fade to Black" print competition. Akua Inks are a non-toxic soy based ink. Works in the competition are limited to the use of the graphite, carbon black, mars black, bone black and paynes gray.

I have been working this week with the paynes grey.

As I don't have a press in my home studio I have been using a gelatine plate.

I have no idea how the oil based ink work on the gelatine in comparison to the soy inks but I find I have difficulty is getting the ink to hold to the plate for the first couple of prints. Once 'seasoned' the ink adheres a bit better. I also find that my plate splits after an hour or so. This is not a crisis as I make is work but I have no idea why it would crack so soon.

These are two test pieces that I was able to pull this week. The top pieces was printed over a "failed' sumi-nagashi piece I had made last spring. This piece would not qualify for the competition.

The lower piece I printed into a mixed media sketchbook I have on the go and as I was not gone an the required paper type is also could not be submitted.

All being said, I like both pieces and am planing on mixing up another pate or three of gelatine and see what emerges this week.

A Fresh Start

My theme

Folded and stitched.

Originally, I worked on a large sheet of paper which I folded

to match the size the books dimensions.

While working on another project involving un-streatched canvas and stitching

I considered the possibility of using canvas

rather than paper.

I used loose gessoed brush strokes

ink wash

cotton embroidery floss and acrylic impressions,

I think of it like a map and unfolds to

show you all the possibilities

of your journey

the cover is a small repurposed felted piece that I had made some time ago.

I take pen in hand and doodle. To me these are doodles rather than drawing because they have no other purpose than to move the pen across the paper and to sink the ink into the fibre.

Printing Papers Collage

It takes a certain amount of intestinal fortitude

to rip, tear or slice into and print lovingly made

Often, I make my mind go blank, rip and then look to see

what has been rendered.

It's best not to think too much and just

Working Every Day

I find it difficult working on the weekends as

I have family at home, errands to be done,

and I would like to have a clean house.

My husband as been at the office today

so I have been working.

Got the errand done, walked the dog, met the girls for a mini run

and chat over coffee.

I then settled down to work.

Tomorrow will be a family day

then back into the studio Monday.

I have just returned from an excellent art adventure day.

Susan and I went to view the Chagall exhibit at the AGO

had and delicious lunch (complete with mini butter tart)

visited two art supplies stores

and

A restaurant supply store in Chinatown.

This place had stuff that I didn't even know I needed.

It was Restaurant Makeover in the flesh

we also managed to collect some wonderful papers for collaging

Chinese NewYear is in three weeks and we purchased wonderful

papers in crimson, gold, and reds

Now to make dinner and plan

I truly never thought that the direction my art would take would be collage.

I did after call this site 'I love the smell of wet paint'.

I have been blocking out wet paint time in the studio the last few day and will continue to do so.

I have also been busy researching opportunities to show my work,

develop marking strategies online

and began giving serious consideration regarding the development of a serious website.

Welcome to my little world of creative property.

I always look forward to a visitor in my studio.

I now block out time when I cannot be disturbed.

Struggling with Etsy Shop

I have been frustrated with my Etsy shop.

Many many shop and item visits via Twitter and Facebook, but no sales as a result of direct visits.

I paid for promotions and have revised work titles, descriptions and tags and banners, sigh.

It is very difficult to be found amongst all the other works posted.

I don't so cutesy, quirkie or crafty.

I think I shall focus on my turkey soup on the stove, crack open a stick of glue and work on some new pieces. Rethink new marketing possibilities tomorrow.

I spent time in the studio yesterday.

If you know me, you know my love of bubble wrap and paint (inks too)

I pick up the paints from my palette (I cover my work table with freezer paper and drop the paint onto the table).

A New Year - New Work

I got to work today. Announced I was unavailable to the family for four hours (yes, I'll admit it wasn't until after the Christmas Tree came down and the living room dusted, but).

I love drawing and painting the figure. I want to celebrate all those curves that make us the remarkable creatures we are. As part of my quality work time each day I will work on a painting as well as work on the creation of supports for future paintings.

Holidays are winding down and all that is left, is

cleaning the mess

eating the leftovers

returning children to the airport and

packing things away in a manner that I will be able to retrieve them next November.

In the meantime I am spending some 'me' time and considering 2012

No resolutions, rather a business plan.

Resolutions sound to much like options, a plan is something to be executed.

Art show/fair submissions

A list of juried gallery shows I will submit to.

I am creating a budget for marketing,

networking, and

New Painting - Find time

It's been a busy time around here, with no signs of slowing down. May need to take a few days to get thing completed before Christmas Eve. I've set the dining room table for 11 though we may have a few more. Right now it is a full time job to get organized.

I did manage to finish this little mixed media piece just last week. Orange is the second chakra colour of creativity - or so I've been told.

Finding comfort in paint

Texture Tuesday AGAIN.....

In the days before hipster and instamatic

we created interesting images by just have major screw ups with

the SLR (note - not digital)

On a trip to Italy, the film becomes jammed in the camera

It is carefully removed in a hood and tossed back in the camera bag

The following year, it is accidentally reloaded into the camera on a trip to France.

Film doesn't always advance as planned and once film is processed and printed you get something

completely unexplainable (except I just did) and I can't figure out what or where it is.

Recently, I have been obsessed with promoting my work. It has felt awkward at best, but what else to do?

In addition to this blog, tormenting FB 'friends' and twitting my life away, I have also ordered business card (very sexy one, I must add) and am hanging work in a restaurant, and soon a couple of salons. My most recent move has been to join Printsy to accompany my Etsy shop. My greatest fear is that I will move away from process and move towards product. Is this why artist starve? Are our brains only wired to create but not operate logically in order to sell. Warhal did. But then again he was the product and his art was the process.

Finding Balance

Finding balance in your life is not as easy as it looks. Just ask this elephant.

Being a creative is suppose to be about the message that your work is relaying. Great, but is reality you also need to move that work along. Something they simply don't teach you in university is finding the balance of creating the work, and supporting the life.

This balancing business may actually take more work the creating the work.

Just Breathe

Art and energy are to come from the core of the creative not from the head. Though I suppose some of the mental creativity has to direct the gut. You know what I mean, Don't think about it. Just do it.

I have indulged myself in a new six-pack of glue sticks. No thinking allowed just respond to what land on the support.

Not so easy as we alway analyze what falls before us.

After awhile, if become like breathing. We dont' think about breathing we just do it.

On Being Fearless

Just over a year ago I took a life altering workshop with Joanne Beaule Ruggles. Though it was a figure workshop (I am still creating figurative pieces), one of the things that Joanne instilled in each of up was

"Be Bold, Be Fearless".

Joanne, I am doing my best as I have been hearing you on almost a daily basis (perhaps another post entirely).

On the being fearless front, I have been working like a crazy woman (the being crazy bit comes naturally sadly) and, last month I opened my etsy shop and have finally got the hang of the site, with the marketing, tagging etc., to get people to where you want them. Not as easy as one would like.

Assistance in the Studio

Yesterday, as part of the grade 9 "take your kid to work day',

a friend's daughter joined me in the studio.

Sarah and I discussed process, research and experimentation.

As part of our process, we (with Moose in tow) went foraging for materials

in the nearby woodlot to stain and dye fabric (unbleached muslin).

We gathered berries (not blueberries but berries that were blue),

And white coloured berries, maple leaves and ferns

Moose supervised,

We brought our treasures home, wrapped them in the cloth then bound them to a garden stone ( we were channelling India Flint) and boiled the living daylights out of them.

We made an interested tea, stained the cloth but no leaf patterns remained.

We require more research.

There will be more attempts.

Experimenting with wet felting

I took a couple of workshops at the Creativfestival this past week.

One with with the Caudets on Wetfelting.

This is the tapestry piece I created using dyed wools, angora, silk threads and other fibres from their grab bag of goodies for us to use.

Yesterday, Susan and I attended the trade floor were I purchased more roving, miscellaneous fibres and other goodies.

Let the games begin.

This was so wonderful.

The glass had small star shaped wholes pressed through the glass.

I loved how the light passed through

The glazing the the texture of the form captured my attention at first.

I came back to this piece THREE times.

reclaiming the landscape

We headed out on our annual Thanksgiving weekend hike today. We wanted to give Moose a real romp in the bush so we headed to a conservation area that we hadn't been to before. The area, which took up the better portion of a concession, must have once been occupied perhaps by a farm. We found interesting object such as the bed frame and construction material which I photographed here. What I found most interesting was even though we had left our mark on the landscape the landscape was taking it back. I loved how the tree is growing from the centre of the bed. Now matter the mess we leave behind, the landscape always seems to clean up after.

Been swamped this week trying to get things done.

The weather is wonderful and I am trying to get the gardens done before

the cold and wet arrives.

I still managed to have a wonderful weekend (last) with the girls and had the BEST time at the Corning Museum of Glass. The piece above had be stopped in my tracks. It as everything I love - line, shape, texture, microcosm, fluidity, contrasting colour and light. It was gorgeous. I have been inspired. Stay tuned to see where it leads me.

I found this when I was tidying up after staining papers.

I left the clothes pins on the deck chair and it had rained.

I got busy and left them there for a few weeks.

I wished I had left paper under the pins.

What a lovely piece of paper it would have stained.

I am unsure who will be joining us, but I am looking forward to some quality time with Victoria, Susan, possibly Bunni, Ruth and Selwin.

Studio Stacks

I am participating in Seth Apter's collaborative project today.

Participating artists are posting images on their blogs of stacks of papers,

journals, etc. that they are working with.

I took my camera to my studio and looked around. I didn't want to create a new stack of something, but rather, find what I had already created.

I was somewhat surprised by what I found.

Stacks of paper, books, tissues, prints, and painting ready to be repurposed.

Stacks of small paintings yet to be resolved.

Stacks of containers of paint, mixed, diluted, and waiting until they are needed.

Stacks of tapes, ready to resist paints and inks, bind books connects papers.

Thanks Seth, I enjoyed looking at my studio with a different mind set.

New Work while I was away

I have just returned from a week in Haliburton, ON with my Husband and our dog Moose

I only took three sketchbooks of different sizes and a small bin with a collection of pens, markers and pencils

I am not sure where this series will take me, but at the time, it felt the right thing to do.

Limiting my work to pen and paper, black and white, line and shape had a zen quality to it which is what I needed right now. I'm looking forward to where all this leads. Until then, please enjoy

Experimenting with needle felting

I love fibre and have been learning to knit for a couple of years now. This summer I also began incorporating stitching into my mixed media pieces. It was only a matter of time that I got into felting with wool roving. I haven't taken a class but have read and researched the process for a few months now. Yesterday I started these two small pieces which I thought I would share with you BEFORE I placed them into the water and actually felted them. I got the roving and the paper in a kit which I have ignored and am just working on creating these two small works which I may or may not further embellish if they actually felt. I'll keep you posted.

The Paper Place Exhibition

The Paper Place in Toronto is holding an 6"x8" exhibition of works on Washi. I registered and created this work (beeswax resist, acrylic, ink, wool roving and thread) for the show. Participants were asked to submit works that "celebrated the beauty and inherent qualities of the washi papers provided". I am very pleased the the outcome of my work, but commitments for my sons wedding I wasn't able to submit it early, and unfortunately, I was not well enough to drop if off today. With it the day after Labour Day it would have been a minimum 2 hours each way and by belly refused to co-operate. I wanted to share it though, so, here it is. I hope you enjoy it.
